Your first Minecraft Bedrock server
Joining from Windows, phones and tablets, your settings, the allow list and add-ons.
1. How do I know my server is ready?
When the Console shows Server started., players can join.
2. How do my friends and I join?
1. In Minecraft, choose Play, then the Servers tab. 2. Choose Add Server. 3. Server Name can be anything. In Server Address, type the part of your address before the colon. In Port, type the number after it. 4. Save, then pick the server to join.
This works on Windows, phones and tablets. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch do not let you add servers from the menu.
3. How do I change the game mode, difficulty or server name?
In the Startup tab: Server Name, Gamemode, Difficulty, Allow cheats and the world name are there. Change them in Startup, not in server.properties, because the server copies them over at every start. Then Restart.
Other settings, such as max-players or view-distance, are in server.properties in the Files tab.
4. How do I make myself an operator (admin)?
Join the server, then type this in the Console with your gamertag and no slash:
op YourGamertag
If your gamertag has a space, put it in quotes: op "Your Gamertag".
5. How do I make my server invite-only?
In the Startup tab, fill in Allow list with your players' gamertags, separated by commas. It is saved to the server within a couple of minutes; restart the server to switch it on. Leave it empty to let anyone join again.
6. How do I add add-ons or behavior packs?
1. Stop the server and make a backup. 2. Upload the pack folders (each has a manifest.json) to behavior_packs or resource_packs in the Files tab. 3. In your world folder (inside worlds), add each pack to world_behavior_packs.json or world_resource_packs.json, using the pack_id (uuid) and version from its manifest.json. 4. Start the server. Players download the packs when they join.
7. Players see "Outdated server". How do I update?
Phones and Windows update Minecraft by themselves, so the server has to keep up. Make a backup, check that Bedrock Version in the Startup tab is set to latest, then choose Reinstall Server in the Settings tab. Your world is kept.
