Your first Rust server

Your map and name, connecting, becoming owner, plugins and wipes.

1. How do I set the server name, map size and seed?

In the Startup tab: Server Name, Description, Max Players, World Size and World Seed. Restart to apply. A new size or seed generates a brand-new map, so do that before players start building.

2. How do I know my server is ready?

The first start generates the map and can take several minutes. When the Console shows Server startup complete, players can connect.

3. How do my friends and I connect?

In Rust, press F1 to open the console and type client.connect followed by your full address, for example:

client.connect node1.empireservers.com:28015

Press Enter. The server also appears in the community server list, which can take a while after the first start.

4. How do I make myself the owner (admin)?

1. Find your SteamID64, the 17-digit number starting with 7656, for example with a site such as steamid.io. 2. In the panel Console, type: ownerid 76561198012345678 "YourName" 3. Then type: server.writecfg 4. Reconnect to the server. You now have admin powers in game.

5. How do I add plugins (Oxide or Carbon)?

1. Make a backup, then set Modding Framework in the Startup tab to oxide or carbon and Restart. The framework is installed as the server starts. 2. Download plugins (.cs files) from a site such as uMod or Codefling. 3. Upload them to oxide/plugins (Oxide) or carbon/plugins (Carbon). They load by themselves, no restart needed.

Each plugin creates its own config file in the config folder next to plugins.

6. How do wipes work?

You can schedule them. In the Startup tab, set Wipe schedule to weekly, biweekly or monthly, and pick the day and hour (US Eastern). At that time the server stops, deletes the map and saves, and starts again on a fresh map. Set Wipe blueprints too to 1 to wipe blueprints as well.
