Your first Valheim server

Your password, joining with a join code, admins and BepInEx mods.

1. First: change the password

Every new Valheim server starts with the password secret, so change it right away. In the Startup tab, set Server Password (at least 5 characters, and it must not contain the server name). Set Server Name and World Name while you are there, then Restart.

2. How do my friends and I join?

Crossplay is on by default, so players join with a join code:

1. In the Console, find the line that mentions join code and note the 6-digit number. It changes every time the server restarts. 2. In Valheim, choose Start Game, pick a character, then the Join Game tab. 3. Choose Add server, type the join code and connect. Enter the server password.

If you set Enable Crossplay to 0 in Startup, join with Join IP and the full address instead (Steam players only).

3. How do I make myself an admin?

1. In game, press F2: your ID is shown, for example Steam_76561198012345678. 2. In the Files tab, open .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/adminlist.txt. 3. Add your ID on its own line, exactly as shown, and choose Save Content. Restart.

Admins can kick and ban from the in-game console (F5). On Steam you may need to add -console to the game launch options first.

4. How do I show or hide my server in the server list?

In the Startup tab, set Public Server to 1 to list it, or 0 to hide it so only people with the join code or address can find it. Restart after changing it.

5. Where is my world, and can I upload my own?

Worlds live in .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/worlds_local. A world is two files with its name: .db and .fwl. To use your own, stop the server, upload both files there and set World Name in Startup to the same name, then start the server.

6. How do I add mods? (BepInEx servers)

On a BepInEx server, upload each mod .dll to the BepInEx/plugins folder and Restart. Most mods must also be installed by every player, with BepInEx on their own game. If a mod page says it is server-side only, players do not need it.
